  • Oshalá, known as Orishalá or Orisha-Nlá in Africa, is a prominent Orisha associated with creation. In Yoruba culture, he is the "Lord of Clay," having used clay to create humanity. He is distinguished in two main manifestations: Oshaguian, the young warrior, and Oshalufan, the older, more patient form​​.
  • Taboos: Oshalá has specific taboos (Ewo Kizila). He abstains from alcohol, salt, palm oil, and charcoal. His followers are also advised against wearing black or red clothing, colors associated with Eshu​​.

Key Manifestations (Aspects)

Obatalá (Oshalá)  manifests in over hundred forms, including two main qualities:

  • Oshaguian: The younger warrior aspect, known for being a skillful strategist and Lord of contrasts. He symbolizes sunrise and is involved in both peace and war, representing duality. Oshaguian is also seen as the "Lord of Essentiality," influencing perception, reading, and intelligence​​.
  • Oshalufan: The older aspect, known as "Lord of Ifon" or "King and Lord of Ifon." He is revered for his deep wisdom and connection to the physical world. Oshalufan is a compassionate guide and protector, embodying patience, kindness, tolerance, and tranquility. He plays a crucial role in guiding moral righteousness, traditions, and religious development​​.

Some other qualities:

  • Ajaguemó – Quality of Obatalá associated with the festival of Edé, in which a symbolic battle is fought between his forces and the forces of Oluniwi.
  • Ajagunan – Goes/Eats with Omolu and Ogum.
  • Ajalá – Shapes the heads Ori.

Many of the manifestations of Obatalá are sometimes considered as independent Orishá.
